Character education is being taught across the nation as a way to foster good citizenship among our youth. If the truth be told, you can't just "teach" character education. You must also provide the opportunity for students to practice good character both inside and outside the classroom. Service learning provides that opportunity for students to practice what they have "learned" in the classroom. By engaging in service learning projects students foster the skills that have been taught to them by actively engaging in an activity in which they can show their good citizenship. Students tend to feel better about themselves when they feel that they have accomplished something and feeling good about yourself builds character.
